In March I will be going to Europe and will be traveling mostly by train. I am going to land in Germany and spend a while there, but the take a train to France. So, when I am taking that train I know I have to get off at the border and buy the next ticket. I am however still a little confused as to how exactly I am supposed to work this out. Could anybody give me like a play by play on the smoothest way to do it?
Customs is not a big deal as i have both an EU and American passport
When you travel by train across a border in Europe you buy a ticket to from your starting city to your destination city.
In the past it was often cheaper to buy a ticket to the last station before a border, walk across and buy a new ticket at the first station. But now the international tickets are mostly far cheaper than two tickets to and from the border. And the fast trains do not stop at the borders anymore.
If you have lived in Europe in the last 6 months you can use InterRail, (or if you have an European passport/nationality you might be able to apply without proof of living) if you have not lived in Europe, or just prefer it, you can use Eurail.
Either one can be the best for you, but unless you travel a lot, separate tickets might well be cheapest.
This site has a lot of information for traveling by train in Europe, the rail passes page will help you decide on the one that is best for you, the general travel pages will tell you about buying tickets. And what kind of trains to expect:

So I have money and want to get out of the country for a while. Decided to tour Europe and I will be by myself. A month would be nice but I don’t have a set time limit or budget.
I’m not sure if I should go on a Contiki tour or if I should just buy a rail pass and do it all myself. I want to check out all the major destinations and I understand a contiki tour will be fairly rushed so I don’t mind doing extratravelingg to see things I might of missed on the contiki. On the other hand touring myself might have its pitfalls and I wouldn’t want to get stuck anywhere or be lonely =(
There are more tours besides Contiki.
Contiki is known for partying at night. If you like that you should travel with them.
If you do not like drinking, or not to excesses, you might prefer a different kind of tour. I have heard of Trafalgar tours, Busabout and more. Each will have its own kind of public and advantages and disadvantages. I have never used any of them in Europe.
On the other hand, if you want to take your time and are not concerned about having someone holding your hand so you do not get lost, you can easily travel in Europe alone.
Eurail passes can be a good option but are often more expensive than buying tickets would have cost.
There are cheaper options if you want to do a limited amount of countries. You can buy 3 country passes, which can, for instance, cover Spain, France and Germany. If that is not enough you could add a few tickets before or after your tour, Travel in Italy is almost always cheaper when buying tickets, the UK is not included in Eurail so you would buy tickets for that any case. In the countries to the east of Germany you can travel for much less than a day on Eurail would cost you. And so on.
Getting lonely is a given. How lonely and how you handle that depends on you more than anything else.
When you stay in hostels you will always meet other people also traveling. But it is on you to make contact, they will not unless they are also traveling alone and getting lonely.
It is possible to do a few day tours, like city tours and to destinations that are harder to reach by train, on which days you will meet others too.
