Barcelona is for most people THE PLACE to visit — shopping, sun, partying — Barcelona really has everything.

We both have been to Barcelona before, and it was great to come back and see everything from a different perspective a few years later.

Tough Diesel with timber train

0 Tough Diesel with timber trainMz 1454 from Baneservice supplying timber to Borregaard in Sarpsborg. Listen to the nice sound of the engine.
The locomotive goes to the other side of the train and pushes the train into the Borregaard Ind.Ltd.
This is not a fast train pass but a slow train with a lot of details.

Entry from: Antwerp, Belgium
Entry Title: “A city i can’t bear to leave”

Entry:

“Left Brussels at about 9 am for Antwerp by rail.

Antwerp centraal station is really just breathtaking. So pretty!!! Even the escalator is special – two escalators are joined together by a moving platform. All the information you need can be obtained from the tourist info centre.

It was raining slightly but the weather was freezing cold, even inside the station.
We happened to pass by the diamond museum on our way to rubenhuis. Decided to enter and learn more about diamond making since antwerp is the reputed diamondland. Audio guides shaped like a telephone receivers are provided. No photography allowed though. The displays inside are preserved pieces. Don’t hope to get any nice souvenirs here cos they are really ****. Imagine getting a black wooden pencil with ‘bling bling – diamond museum’ imprinted on it home -.-

Due to the cold weather, we decided to eat and check in our hotel first. We bought baguettes with turkey meat for lunch from Panos. Really rocks and super fresh. Subway is like yucks after you have tasted this. Our hotel is a 20 mins walk from the centraal station. It was great to walk there (minus the backpacks) as both sides of the roads are lined with attractions and boutiques! To our disappointment, all the shops are closed except for some eateries as it was some public holiday.
Finally reach de kathedral. So nice! Our hotel is just next to it. Although the hotel is small but it is really beautiful with helpful receptionists as well. Free wifi provided and there is a free access computer near the dining area. The keyboard is abit weird though.

Our room on the 3rd level -room 37 rocks. The ceiling outside our room has a small window where you can see the kathedral. I LOVE hotel postiljon!! However, you need to have small feet or just be extra cautious if you wanna stay here as the stairs steps are really small and steep! I just pray that i wont tumble down from the stairs.

You can find everything here – souvenirs shops, eateries, chocolates…
All the buzz aside, we just come on the wrong day. It was acession day for catholics which is the public day mentioned. Cant shop and sightsee. Rubenhuis is closed too. Argh what a waste cos entry for students is just 1 euro, down from 4 euros previously. So check your calendar for special hols that are not fixed.
Near the kathedral we also got to taste the award winning max frites. Frites shop owners have common characteristics and outlook – big sized (more famous, bigger in size?) and likes to fry tons of frites non-stop. Anyway, the queue here is just never ending.

We had to catch the eurolines bus to amsterdam early next morning so we ordered breakfast for takeaway for 10eur from our hotel kitchen.

The next morning, breakfast was already packed for us in a huge brown paper bag. After a nice warm coffee, we made our way to the indicated eurolines station at vanstalen straat. When we reached there, it wasnt a bus stop but a closed eurolines office. :S
We started to ask around and they directed us to the centraal station. So there we go and we couldnt find a single ****. The security guards at the station directed us back to the office. Time was ticking and we panicked. Another round of direction asking and they directed us back to the centraal station again. Blahs. Suddenly, we saw an eurolines bus sailing past us and turning towards the office. We ran after the the bus and realised that the stop is in fact opp the office. Unindicated. The bus is packed and we had to sit behind this woman who had her seat fully reclined. :(

Our hotel breakfast pack was really incredible- slices of cheese, 2 types of bread, cake, yoghurt, different spreads and choc milk. I love the choc milk!!!

Overall antwerp is a much nicer city than brussels.”

Questions about the Euro Rail?

I will be traveling in Europe for a few weeks in September/October, and I am curious about how long the following train trips take:
Paris to Provence
Provence to Venice
Venice to Rome

Also, I already have the pass, but is it difficult to get on those trains? As in, do they run often and do they fill up quickly?

Thank you!

First, Eurorail is just the name of the pass. You will be traveling on French and Italian trains. Most of the trains at that time of year will not sell out early. However, if you were taking the night train from Paris to either Rome or Venice, it would be adviseable to book early.

You can find schedules for the trains here in Italy at: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD . A fast train from Venice to Rome takes 3 hr 46 minutes. Reservations are mandatory; with your Eurail pass, you will have to pay an additional 10 euro for the reservation. You can buy the reservation right up to the time the train leaves Venice; it is unlikely the train will be full. There are also a few intercity trains and you could work out a point to point route on regional trains where you would not have to pay for the reservation with a pass. However, the travel time will be over 6 hours for the intercity train and much more (plus multiple train changes) for the regional trains. There also is another option – the night train which leaves Venice at 11:30 pm and arrives in Rome at 6:20 am. The advantages of this train are that you can use time you would be sleeping anyway for travel and you do not need to pay for a hotel/hostel for the night. this train also has a mandatory reservation, but will only cost you 3 euro with the pass for a seat. Even better would be a berth in a 4 bed compartment which will cost 33 euro with the pass, but it’s much more comfortable for sleeping.

If you want to book in advance through the website above, you select the Global Pass option from the pull down menu that says other fares on the page you are taken to after you select a specific train. This will allow you to book the reservation only without having to also pay for an individual ticket. Reservations only booking is not available on the French train site (or most others in Europe).

The German train site is one of the best sites for finding train schedules throughout most of Europe: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/index.shtml , but you’ll need the French site to book tickets if you don’t just buy them at the station.

Times and options will depend on exactly where you want to go in Provence. A direct TGV (fast) train from Paris to Aix-en-Provence takes approximately three hours. From Aix-en-Provence to Venice takes 11 to 18 hours on the train with 2 to 7 train changes.

French train site: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/

You might find this site useful for information on using your railpass: http://www.seat61.com/ It’s the best resource for train travel throughout europe that I am aware of.
