Entry Title: “Interlaken, Switzerland”

Entry:

“We decided to make a quick exit out of Switzerland because we were going to go broke if we stayed for any length of time. So we took the scenic mountain route out of Lucerne with our EuroRail pass – no expenses other than a sandwich or two. Unfortunately there were low lying clouds the whole trip and we missed the snow capped mountains but it was pretty just the same.”

Travel around Europe by Train…?

My friends and I are planning on travelling Europe next summer but by train and were wondering if there are any train tickets that allow you to travel on all the train lines in Europe, and how much they are? We found one with interrail but the longest it seems you can have a ticket for is a month and we were hoping to travel for longer than that. So does anyone know of anything we could look into?
Thanks

Are you European?
If not, you can not use InterRail, but you can use Eurail.
That system has passes for two months.

InterRail is for one month at most, but you are allowed to use two or more passes.

Whether it is useful to have a pass for two or more months is doubtful, you need to spend a lot of time on trains to get profit from having a pass over separate tickets, specially tickets bought early.

This page tells you all about rail passes:

http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-guide.htm

If you travel with InterRail you could start out with one short term ticket, like a 5 days of travel in 10 days time, to get you to your first far out destination, spend a week or longer there, buying local tickets for day trips if wanted, have a second pass, which can be a 10/22 to get you across Europe and at the end of that pass stay put for a while again, and finish with an other 5/10 pass, or instead of the 5/10 passes, fly with a cheap ticket to a far destination and start your month long pass after you have seen the region, do one month pass or a combination of shorter passes, end up near an airport from which you have a ticket home. Specially useful if you do not live near your international border but do live near an airport with cheap flights.

If you travel with Eurail, consider to use 2 or more 3 country passes.
That way you have spend much less than two months global passes.

And remember (as you should have read on the site of the man in seat sixty-one,) that you often have to pay extra when you travel with passes, and you still need to make reservations, often well in advance for popular trains.

Entry from: Madrid, Spain
Entry Title: “Madrid”

Entry:

“Madrid is an interesting post. Looking further into Madrid, I realized that the city is the central location in Spain with access to all the cities I am going to from Lisbon Portugal, Saville & Barcelona Spain. To see all of these cities while not staying planted for too long and to save on budget, I figured why not sleep on my long train rides to the cities. For the last several of nights I have been sleeping only on trains from France to Madrid, Madrid to Lisbon, Lisbon to Madrid then anticipate from Seville to Barcelona – You can only imagine how badly I need a shower and shave right now! However this does not hinder the experience one bit. The train rides I scheduled are typically from 11pm to about 8 am.

After waking up in Madrid from Paris I wanted to take it easy – I found an internet café, did my whole Paris post then wandered the city aimlessly getting a ‘taste’ for the city life, looking for great deals on tapa’s and cerveza (beer). The beer is good, and their ham is actually cut from behind the bar by making delicate slices off a pigs thigh and cooking it right in front of you (typical for all of Spain and Portugal). I also noticed that dogs are a indication of status, large dogs indicate that you have a large apartment in the city as apposed to a small one that will fit only a lap dog. This was first day in Madrid before the sleeping on the train to Portugal.

The trains, unfortunately I hadn’t taken any photos of them for you. Trains come in many different sizes and luxuries. The trains coming from France are very nice with reclining seats, carpeted floors and ample leg room. However going to and from Portugal from Spain used vastly different trains – old, hardly padded seats, arm rests are stationary floors are metal and the interior is green – hardly the ideal sleeping situation but for free (using my EuroRail Pass), I really cant complain!

The train back from Portugal left at about 11pm, I got a FULL day of Lisbon in (see next entry) and was ready to sleep. I was stationed at a seat where the seats just opposite myself were face towards me, vacant and ideal for leg rests. The sleep was great until a couple gentleman woke me in my slumber speaking Portugese demanding something of me, the attention awoke everyone in my train cabin. Not knowing what they are talking about I immediately take out my passport and ticket, yet they were not satisfied. They indicated they wanted me to take all of my things and move to the front of the train as if I had done something wrong – I am just confused and a bit intimidated at this point. I take everything as if I was being kicked off the train, and in the next cabin, they were rummaging through my bags and clothing, everything they said to me, I just replied with “nada” at this point. Of course, they found nothing incriminating besides a half pint bottle of scotch that I enjoyed my cigar with seaside in Portugal – they laughed it off and sent me back to my slumber. Odd, I didn’t find the merriment in the whole ordeal.

I get off the train 8 am in Madrid, and right when I exit, a man asked me for my passport and what my reason for travels were (this also happened several times coming to Spain from France), I don’t know what it is about my appearance but it is very alarming to the authorities apparently. The day in Madrid I wanted to go to the world famous Prado Museum, I was looking forward to this for several of days. I get to the front doors to learn that they were closed that day. So since I had time to kill in Madrid yet again before my night train leaves to Saville, I will roam the city streets and lose myself. Coming across a monumentos fountain, I stopped at an intersection and gazed for a bit, nearby this very attractive girl had asked some locals to take a photo of her. Immediately I heard the English and knew she was from the states. Now come on, I would be a …”

Entry from: Granada, Spain and Canary Islands
Entry Title: “GRANADA”

Entry:

“Our intentions were to travel up to Cordoba, Toledo and into Madrid. Tourists etc. all said we were making a mistake by not travelling into Granada. We needed a laundry day and hopped on the train (our EuroRail pass kicked in today) so we thought travelling was cheap and if we could get tickets to the Alhambra in Granada that would be a bonus.

Well laundry got finished and we saw the Alhambra from a distance. Wow it is impressive! We didn’t feel too cheated as we spent quite a bit of time at the Alcazar in Seville which basically the difference between the two is that the Alhambra remains fully Moorish architecture while the Alcazar in Seville has been occupied by many cultures over the years so therefore incorporated various types of cultural changes and add-ons over time. So we basically wandered the city of Granada. We were staying in the University area, suprisingly quiet and generally a nice area to be in as it was close to most sites.

We meandered through the Albaicin District. It was the only area that was spared during the Reconquista therefore lots of narrow little streets and interesting buildings etc: Currently it houses bazarre like streets with tiny shops, and unique restaurants. Many African & Middle Eastern types of food – quite tasty.

I am using a new keyboard, am struggling & wasting precious internet time – sorry for any typing errors etc.”

Entry from: Carriacou, Grenada
Entry Title: “Little islands”

Entry:

“The first morning i get up and try to get my bearings of the town hilsbrough.. The main street is about 200metres long, all the buildings look old, faded and in need of a bit of tlc.. i try the tourist office for a map of carriacou as my LP doesn’t have one but it’s a saturday and office is closed, by mid afternoon the whole town pretty much closes til monday morning. At the far end i’m called over by a cute girl of about 12, she asks me where i’m from, I tell her London… and her reply was.. ‘oh, do you know Margret?’ .. i’m like, “sorry who?” then i’m told it’s her auntie who works in the hospital there.. i tell her we have many hospitals in London.. As i walk on i’m thinking that because Carriacou has just the one hospital, she must had thought London was the same in size and that everyone knows each other.. She couldn’t have been more wrong, Carriacou life is slow and very friendly.. as i’ve been walking around the island.. everyone wants to wave at me and say hello.. if i don’t say hello then it would seem rude.. where as London, everything is fast, no-one knows anyone and more over on the street walking along no-one really wants to know anyone..

I’ve been having problems with my mobile phone.. since i left Trinidad i haven’t been able to top up my now run down credit in Grenada.. even though when i was buying it i was told i could top up all over the caribbean, in St. George the girl receptionist said it wasn’t recognizing my number.. i tried again in carriacou with the same problem. when i get to Union island on Thursday i’m gonna buy a new sim card to get round it.. plus that will eliminate the higher roaming charges atleast until i get to St. Lucia. Another funny thing with these phones over here it seems that i can’t txt message rival firm phones, such as Digicel.. i not sure if it’s because they are incompatible or just because they are 2 competing firms that don’t want to do favours for each other..

Tommorow i’ve got to find out about the postal boat that travels between to my next island in the grenadines, it’s ment to be real cheap like 20ec, which considering it cost 60ec to get the short distance over to sandy island is quite a bargain.. i’m gonna try and get a month visa this time so that i don’t feel so rushed and i also need to get some more sea sickness tablets for the trip over. What’s good about the next few islands are that the currency of Eastern Caribbean dollars is staying the same for a while… well apart from the more expensive islands of Martinique and guadeloupe which use the euro. What i’ve noticed when talking to people about my backpacking adventure starting in the caribbean is the main worry that it’s gonna cost too much, but i’d say that when compared to traveling round europe the budget is quite the same and still way cheaper than London.. the Caribbean is sunnier, has more beaches and more independently planned than a tour or rail pass around Europe. It still has it’s fair share of history and culture.. and plus living right next door to Europe for 25 years i’ve felt lathargic to go and make the most of it, prefering to venture further a field..

and finally, Yesterday i got hustled bad, when walking over to the far end of the island up and down a massive hill which on top has the hospital with commanding views, i was stopped by two girls of 7 and 8.. they were quite intelligent and could hold a conversation whilst we were walking along this track.. then they came out with that they were really after a dollar each because they were raffling a clock at school, i had …”

I’m staying over there for 2 weeks and need a train tix for all 3 countries. Is there a cheap tix that i can buy to let me visit 3 countries?
I guess i’ll have to book an overnite train also?
I’ve looked at raileurope.com and its a little confusing.

There’s an excellent website that explains railpasses in great detail including how to determine whether a railpass is better than individual tickets, which pass to buy if one is of value to you, and how to use a pass: http://www.seat61.com/ .

A couple of things you need to know –

Many high speed, international and night trains require mandatory reservations. there will be an additional charge when you use a railpass on these trains.

Here in Italy, a railpass is rarely worth the money – see the section called Common railpass mistakes: Italy… on the railpass page of the seat61 site. That can apply to international trains to/from Italy as well. For example, a night train between Rome, Florence or Venice costs 130 euro at the standard fare for a berth in a 4 bed compartment. With a railpass, you need to make a reservation and pay 45 euro for the same berth. However, there is a quota on the number of railpasses that can be used on the train – you need to buy in advance before the railpass slots sell out. If you buy an individual ticket in advance, there are discounts available; the cheapest option is the "smart" fare which costs 45 euro.

Entry from: Kiev, Ukraine
Entry Title: “Half Ukrainian”

Entry:

“It only made sense to visit Ukraine since I am half Ukrainian myself. Ukraine was
a little more difficult to visit than Germany. It is not part of the European union so my
Eurorail train pass would not work. Flying would be my mode of transportation. In Rome I
had my first obstacle to overcome. While checking in for my flight they asked for proof of my
exit of Ukraine…which I didn’t have. I usually just figure out my next step once I am there.
Frustrated and confused I went looking for someway to get a flight out of Ukraine, so that I
could go there. This is why I usually try to get to the airport 3 hours early. After running
around for a bit I ended up at a internet terminal which costed me 6 Euro for 30 minutes. I
was able to find a good priced ticket, but I was rushed and didn’t have time to figure stuff
out so I was forced to purchase a ticket directly to Istanbul, Turkey. I originally wanted
to make my way there through Romania and Bulgaria but not anymore. I had to stop in Riga, Latvia
for the night which was fine because I could explore another country. I learned that when your
flight stops somewhere they generally tag the bag to the final destination UNLESS you specify.
So I only had my backpack with me and some random things such as pasta, wallet, elastics and
other useless things. I assume that if I went to the desk in Riga and requested my bag back
they could do it but I didn’t want to risk something going wrong, confusion or the hastle so I
just left my bag, I had my wallet and Passport the rest I could do without… I was also ripped
off by a coin machine that day, I put my 1 euro in to buy some mobile toothbrush invention
thing and yep, I turned the nob to find nothing inside, was very angry.

I had written down the directions to the hostel in Kiev, Ukraine and searched for the metro station.
There I learned that the coins I had that said 10 were actually 10 cents…The subway costed
1.7 and I had a 10 coin so I put it in the tray and the lady just looked at it, picked it up
and dropped it back into the tray and looked at me with a small smile and gave a confused look.
Embarrassed I looked for some paper bills. It is important to note that the metro is extremely
busy! People are everywhere and its madness almost, very high stress situation. I headed down the
LONGEST escalator ride in my life, must have been equivalent to 7 or so normal escalators.
I later learned that Ukraine had some of the deepest subways in the world. At the bottom
I took out my directions and went to the sign to see EVERYTHING was in Cyrillic writing…
Nothing that common sense could decipher. After receiving no help from locals due to language
barriers. The subway was so full that the last person to get on a train car in front of me had
to squish in and then the door tried to close but kept hitting his and shoes… I have
never seen anything like it before it was unbelievably packed! There was no way even if I
knew where to go that I could get in there with my bags… I decided to head back to train
station and maybe find some internet so I could re-think my strategy. I found an internet room
and after looking at the map just decided to walk, I was fairly frustrated and thought
the cool air would be good for me! I has so busy being angry on my walk I barely remembered it!
Little did I know that things would get ALOT better fairly soon…

Ukraine itself leans towards the poor side of the scale. Many vehicles are ex-military and
many police officers are wearing camouflage. The bus ride from the airport was about
45 minutes long to get to the main train station downtown, so I enjoyed my tour along the way.
Upon my arrival at the hostel I quickly made friends with a Canadian (Toronto), Turkish and
Spanish guys. The Canadian had lots of experience in Kiev so he would become a valuable asset.
We all headed out for a evening that could only be labeled as Anarchy, will never forget it!
The food is great, its a good price and most things are tasty. My favorite places to eat would
be the ones where you take a tray and go around collecting the things you would like to eat
and than pay similar to a cafeteria. The downtown district was very modern and full of people.
Many young people hanging out with groups of friends. There are many reminders of the …”
