Interesting train travel

0 Interesting train travelThis is really interesting. When travelling from Moldova (old soviet country) to Romania, the train has to stop and change it wheels to enable it to travel on the Europeen rail tracks. The whole process takes 2 hours. The soviets have a different track to europe to prevent invasion from Europe by rail back in the days of war.

0 Twenty and a half hours in Milan Travellingrosss photos around Milan, ItalyA TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Milan, Italy by TravelPod blogger Travellingross titled “Twenty and a half hours in Milan”

Travellingross’s travel blog entry:

“Trained from Monaco to Nice to get my reserved train seat on the 4.5hr train trip to Milan. Then realised that the train goes via Monaco so I could’ve caught it there!!! Then once on the train I got fined €50 because I had not written the date on my Euro-rail pass. Was so not happy because it was such a pathetic reason to get fined. The guy didn’t speak any English and I had another passenger thankfully interpreting for me. Ended up paying when a NZ passenger (friendly middle-aged couple) said to be careful cause he may just kick me off the train at the next station!! So I payed up…should’ve read the fine-print, but my travel agent should’ve explained this all to me. I’m not at all impressed with her (from Escape Travel) and would definitely not recommend. So yeah, welcome to Italy – get fined 50 bucks!

Anyways, the train trip had picturesque views of the Italian coastline and passed thru many towns. Slower than the Madrid-Barcelona train, that went 290km/h! Got off the humid & hot train and stepped into a very chilly Milan (or Milano as the Italians say). It is surprisingly cold here — darn, I sent most of my winter clothes home already…hmmm might have to go shopping.

The hotel I’m staying at is alcheapo at €45 for the night. From Monaco to this hahaha. Need to save some cash given my Monte Carlo splurge. Plus, I am in Milan for less than 24hrs, so all I need is a roof over my head for the night and something central. Omg, just realised there is no toilet paper or tissues. Plus, the reception gave a city map that has been used before and is torn.

Duomo square seems to be the centre of old Milan. Great spot. Amazing sculptures on the cathedral.

Had a fantastic meal at Sabatini just around the hotel corner. Was recommended on Trip Advisor. Delicious home-made spaghetti and delectable ice cream meringue with melted chocolate. So good at an avg price. Although, I don’t think Europeans know how to make bread — it is always stale or a rock imitating bread.

Got up at the crack of dawn (literally) to explore in the morning before my train to Venice at 11:30am. Very cold morning — 3 layers of clothes and my new Valentino scarf (Made in Italy) and I was still frozen. Was very lucky to get into a viewing of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ as there was a cancellation in the 8:30am session & I literally walked in off the street. I always thought ‘The Last Supper’ was an oil on canvas painting, but it is actually painted on a wall in a church (now a museum). Very educational. It is limited to a 10 min viewing, max of 25 people per session — complete opposite to Mona Lisa. After that I went to Castello Sforzesco, which is remnant Castle from the days of Italian royalty. Not as well maintained as London or Paris castles, but more authentic looking and aged. Bit of wandering about before checking out of hotel and walking to the Milan Railway Station (a really nice building actually) to set off for the c****s of Venice.

PS — happy bday cuz Sarah…”
