Adding Up the Costs of Lost Travel in Europe

2 Adding Up the Costs of Lost Travel in EuropeThis is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish

Air traffic over much of Europe came to a halt for six days in April because of the huge cloud of ash from a volcano in Iceland. The economic costs added up as airlines flew everyone to where they were trying to go. At its worst, the crisis affected nearly a third of world air travel. About one hundred thousand flights were cancelled or delayed. The International Air Transport Association estimated the cost to airlines at nearly two billion dollars. But that does not include costs like the tons of flowers that growers in Kenya and Israel had to destroy. Or all the fruits and vegetables that could also not be flown to Europe. Other businesses that depend on air travel, including hotels and vacation places, also suffered. The crisis affected airports from Washington to Pakistan. The crisis came just as Europe is trying to recover from its worst recession in generations. Greece — a popular travel place — continues to face a debt crisis that has sharply raised its borrowing costs. The United States halted air travel for three days after the terrorist attacks in two thousand one. The travel ban in April lasted twice as long in some European countries. Critics accused European air transport officials of being slow to react, then overreacting to the possible risk to airplanes. The volcano eruption cost time and money for travelers. Hundreds of thousands were stuck. Some had no place to stay except the airport. Others tried to make their way by train, bus, boat or car. Vacationers had to change or cancel plans. And not all businesses were sympathetic. An American stuck in London, already one of the world’s highest priced cities, found that her hotel had doubled its prices. Some embassies offered emergency loans to their citizens. Passengers delayed on European airlines may be able to get back at least some of the money they had to spend. The crisis brought new attention to the billion-dollar market for travel insurance. About thirty percent of Americans buy policies to cover unexpected problems when they travel. Some credit cards offer a form of insurance and could also face claims. The volcanic eruption was the second time in two years that Iceland has shaken its neighbors to the east. The first time was the near-collapse of Iceland’s banks and currency during the world financial crisis. And that’s the VOA Special English Economics Report.

I want to plan a trip to Czech Republic from Slovenia on Aug 12 by train.

Could somebody tell me how to book the ticket and tell me the accurate budget and how long will it take?

I might start from Ljubljana’s train station and then the destination is Prague. After I arrive at Prague, I’ll stay there for three days, I want to know what views I must see and which YH(Youth Hostel) is convenient for me to stay and the price is also reasonable.(I want a room for 3~4 people)

So the following are what I want to know:

1.How to arrange a train travel from Ljubljana To Prague?

2.Attractive tour spots in Praguge(Who can tell me how to completly run over it by local subway in there days is better), Which YH I can stay, and how much might these cost?

3.The total budget about the above-mentioned.

Anyone who can answer any questions above or give any suggestions about the tour will be very appreciated.

1. Go to a train station in Slovenia, tell them what you need and thay will help you.

2. karlov most, tancujuca budova

3. I have no idea

Most economical way to travel from Frankfurt to Paris?

I am planning to visit France while on my way to India. But my ticket is already booked via Frankfurt. What is the best way to travel from Frankfurt to Paris? Rail europe showed me a price of around $300. Are there any alternatives? How much does a plane ticket usually cost? If it does not cost much less, I prefer a train to plane because I get to see europe a little more.
I’m not a student, nor under 30 :-)

Hi!
I travelled from Paris to Frankfort a few times and always used the night train b/c it was not too expensive and basically you just have to sleep and wake up in Frankfurt. However we now have very competitive low cost airline in Europe that sell flight tickets for almost nothing (if you don’t wait 2 days before your departure to book!). You can try the following ones:
- Ryanair (ryanair.com)
- Easyjet (easyjet.com)
- Germanwings (germanwings.com)
- Virgin Express (virginexpress.com)
- Air France (this is not a low cost but a flag airline; however they frequently offer some very discounted tickets. On wednesdays you will find special offers on their site)

You should try expedia.fr (if you speak French). THey usually have the best offers.

I hope you will love your trip

Julie

DK spektre ok for street yes or no!?

ok iv been wanting to get the dk spektre race bike for cruising around with because its such a great deal. but i ride alot and often hop curbs and its not a street bike so im not sure if its safe to buy and try to keep the curb hopping to a minimal. iv got several, yea it’ll be fine if you try to not do any curb hopping, and i got a couple no it wont hold up. so what do you think? i just dont know if i could pass up such a great deal with it being 60% off orginal price and getting something that is made cheaper for the same price. well here are the spec’s and tell me what you think

Frame: DK Race Pro design 100% 7000 series Hydro-formed Aluminum w/ 3D dropout
Fork: DK R/T 100% Butted & Tapered 4130 Chromo (1-1/8”)
Handlebar: DK Crazy-8 2 pc 11 butted 100% 4130 Chromoly
Grips: DK Tsuka
Stem: Alloy 1-1/8” Front Load
Headset: Integrated, sealed cartridge 1-1/8”
Brake: Tektro Alloy V-brake w/ Linear spring
Detangler: N/A
Cranks: DK Social 3pc 175mm Chromoly
BB: Euro Sealed w/48 splined Chromoly spindle
Pedals: DK Aluminum Platform w/ screw in pins
Sprocket: DK 44T CNC Alloy
Cog: 16T Cassette
Chain: KMC
Wheels: Sun Rhyno Lite XL w/sealed front & rear, DK Cassette
Seat: DK Moto w/ 7mm rails
Post: Alloy 27.2 mm Micro Adjust
Tires: Kenda Small Block 8, 20” X 1.95” Front, 20" X 1.75" Rear
Accessories: N/A
Color: Gloss Black
Top Tube: 21”
Chain Stay Length: 14.5”
Head Tube Angle: 74 degrees
Seat Tube Angle: 71 degrees
Weight: 22.7 lbs.

Wait, Is the frame aluminum? I would consider watching that as a big con. However, if all your doing is stuff under a foot, then it would probably hold up; anything big then I’d reconsider. The sprocket set is also a bit big in my opinion but that isn’t something to not buy a bike for. The frame is awfully big too; 21" TT and 14.5 CS? The funny thing when I read this was that there was a DK bike under 23 pounds as they’re usually 25-28; must be the frame.

Overall, I will agree that 60% off is an amazing price and it is light as heck for a complete however the frame is something to seriously consider. For doing drops under 1 foot then it should be okay, anything else I wouldn’t trust it. If you plan on grinding and you miss the pegs on your hop, that chainstay is going to have a dent on it. In short term, the bike would be fine but as you progress and get better, it’s not gonna hold up and will end up costing more once the bike breaks. I’d look into WeThePeople.
