Train pass to travel within Europe?

I’m planning to visit Europe, but not sure how to travel from country to country or even city to city. I need to get a train pass that will allow me to travel from country to country like France to Germany and also from city to city within the country like, Rome to Florence. But where can I get these train passes? Can someone give me an info or a link?

What you’re thinking about is a Eurail Pass. There are several passes available, and which one you get depends on the countries you’re visiting, the number of weeks you’ll be travelling, and the number of times you’re likely to use the pass.

Be aware that often it’s cheaper to buy point-to-point fares than to use a pass. If you’re doing a number of long distance trips from one country to another, then it’s worthwhile. But for trips between cities, unless right a across a country, it’s better to buy tickets than to waste a Pass day.

Get a guidebook to Europe, Lonely Planet publish good ones, and this will give you information on travel within countries and between countries, accommodation, sites to see, how much everything will cost – including approximate costs of travel, and visas if necessary.

Travel to Europe by train or plane?

Hi!

I have three weeks to travel to Europe. Cities I’d like to visit are Paris, Barcelona, Florence, Amsterdam, and Prague, in that order of interest.

I know it’s a lot to pack in such a short time so I might have to skip Prague and Amsterdam.
I was wondering what would be the best option to do the trip, whether by plane or train, as far as time concerns. I’ve read that the problem with doing it by plane is that often the airports aren’t close to the center of the city, as opposed to train stations, and that I also have to factor in security check delays, etc.

Cost is important to me but I’m not that restricted either. I guess if I do it by plane I’d better start buying tickets as I’ll be leaving in a month from today.

Also, if you have any suggestions about the order in which I should visit those cities, please feel free to give your two cents.

Thank you!
Also, I’m under 25 and a student, so that could help with the fares.

It’s true that the train stations are often in or near the center of of the city and you don’t have to worry about arriving early, checking-in, early boarding, waiting for baggage, etc. That gives the trains an advantage on trips of up to 3 to 4 hours. Much beyond that and it’s faster by plane. However, the train can still be a nice way to go. I like to take the night trains and use time I’d be sleeping anyway for transit. It also saves on a hotel for the night. You can also stop of along the way to see places of interest. The night train from Paris to Florence is a good way to go; I’ve taken that train several times although I pick it up/get off in Bologna.

With three weeks, you’ve got time to go either way. It’s a matter of convenience, cost and preference.

There are a couple of good resources for budget flights here: http://www.whichbudget.com/en/ , and http://www.skyscanner.net/

A good resource for researching train connections throughout Europe is: http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

Generally, you’ll need to go to the individual country train sites to price/book tickets: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3fdbe14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD (Italy), http://www.sncf.com/en_EN/flash/ (France), http://www.ns.nl/cs/Satellite/travellers (Netherlands), http://www.renfe.es/horarios/english/index.html (Spain)

There are often good discounts on the trains if you buy tickets far enough in advance.
