Incantesimi

Train Travel Through Europe?

In March I will be going to Europe and will be traveling mostly by train. I am going to land in Germany and spend a while there, but the take a train to France. So, when I am taking that train I know I have to get off at the border and buy the next ticket. I am however still a little confused as to how exactly I am supposed to work this out. Could anybody give me like a play by play on the smoothest way to do it?
Customs is not a big deal as i have both an EU and American passport

When you travel by train across a border in Europe you buy a ticket to from your starting city to your destination city.
In the past it was often cheaper to buy a ticket to the last station before a border, walk across and buy a new ticket at the first station. But now the international tickets are mostly far cheaper than two tickets to and from the border. And the fast trains do not stop at the borders anymore.

If you have lived in Europe in the last 6 months you can use InterRail, (or if you have an European passport/nationality you might be able to apply without proof of living) if you have not lived in Europe, or just prefer it, you can use Eurail.
Either one can be the best for you, but unless you travel a lot, separate tickets might well be cheapest.
This site has a lot of information for traveling by train in Europe, the rail passes page will help you decide on the one that is best for you, the general travel pages will tell you about buying tickets. And what kind of trains to expect:
